On TBOGT, since the bullets can shake and wobble your helicopter while your moving in, the bumper switch is the best counter to a sidewind.
Move In On A Sit Still Straight Shooter On GTA 4 Original
Watch this video tutorial to learn how to effectively move in on and take out a sit still shooter pilot on the GTA 4 Original game. With more pilots, come more styles. One of the most common styles of dogfighting amongst newer pilots is 'straight shooting.' This is when a pilot sits in one spot and just shoots, not moving around at all or circling. While this gives them a bit of an advantage because their helicopter is steady, experienced pilots can over come this problem rather quickly. There are many ways to counter a straight shooter but here at GTA5Pilots.com, our personal favorite would have to be: A Rush into a dropshot. You can do this by getting right on their level, a few feet above them if you like. Chances are, the straight shooter will be holding acceleration the whole time, therefore going up with you. You come in straight, with speed but just before you get into range, let go of your acceleration and shoot up, while slowly descending backwards, back out of shooting range. If he or she is infact holding acceleration, it will be very difficult for them to adjust when you change levels at the last second.
Take On Double Teamers On GTA 4 Original

The better you get, the more people will come after you. There are many ways to take on double teamers and this experienced pilot shows you how one of them is done. TBOGT: Our personal advice on dealing with more than one helicopter pilot at a time would be 'divide and conquer.' Lets say your near 'blue' and you already know 'yellow' is his friend and is approaching from the other side of the map, then instead of waiting for him to arrive you should go on the offensive and take out 'blue.' Lets say 'blue' and 'yellow' are already here, ready to attack you. Dont dogfight them at a low altitude, start climbing while your circle, avoiding engagement. Most likely they wont be flying on the same level, one will be a couple hundred feet above the other. Keep circling out, acting as if your about to engage him but then rush down lighting up the one whos at a lower altitude. Your only goal should be to hit him as much as you can while still flying past him (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CIRCLE AND FINISH HIM OFF). By this time the first chopper will be pretty close behind you so you have to do a quick turn around and then into a dropshot or sidewind. Alot of players go for the better helicopter pilot first but we go for the weak ones first unless the good one is already very close to shooting range. The altitude technique that we discussed above is perfect for taking out the noob pilot while acting as if you were going to engage the legit player.
